Following the money trail in Mumbai

November 21, 2009

Indian newspapers are abuzz these days about progress in the investigation of the Nov. 26, 2008, (“26/11”) attacks on Mumbai, which led to the deaths of more than 160 at the Taj Mahal & Oberoi hotels, a Jewish center, and hospital.

The bloody dividends of the money jihad (Mumbai, November 2008)

We know that the Pakistan and Kashmir based jihadist group Lashkar-e-Taiba was involved.  More recently, the role of two North American Muslims, David Headley (aka Daood Gilani) and Tahawwur Rana (who were arrested in Illinois last month on separate charges for their plot against the Danish newspaper that printed the Muhammad cartoons) has also been exposed.  Today, Money Jihad blog zeroes in on where Lashkar-e-Taiba, Headley, and Rana got their money in the first place.

Lashkar-e-Taiba was nursed on the teat of Pakistan’s ISI in the 1990s.  That’s the same ISI that encouraged the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the same ISI that reportedly received $15 billion from our own CIA since 9/11.  Currently, most of LeT’s funding comes from—you guessed it—the zakat.  Reuters just reported today that,  “It has support and funding in the Pakistani diaspora, often in the form of donations for its charitable work. Analysts say it could exploit this network for attacks on the west.”

This follows the typical pattern we’ve seen with other major jihadist organizations such as Al Qaeda.  They may receive some funding through state sponsorship, but the bulk of their wealth comes from Islamic zakat payments.

As for David Headley, a text message is being widely circulated in Surat, India, accusing Surat’s diamond industry of a link to Headley.  Some translation of this Mumbai DNA article is required here:  “sms” means text message, and “under scanner” means under scrutiny.

Is Surat’s diamond industry funding terror mastermind David Headley, who is believed to be linked to 26/11 and other terrorist incidents in the country? This is exactly what an sms, doing rounds of Surat from Thursday morning, claimed.

The sms claimed Headley’s links with Surat had been unearthed, and that a large sum of money from the city was transferred to a foreign bank. The message also claimed that the diamond cutting & polishing industry of Surat was under the scanner of investigators for these alleged links and transactions.

The sms was the only topic of discussion in diamond circles in Surat during the day. “David Headley’s Surat connection unearthed. Rs64 crore were transferred to Bank of New Zealand from Surat. Diamond industry under scanner,” states the sms.

Wherever Headley’s money came from, at least some of it is still floating around.  The Times of India sent a reporter to Chicago who found that Headley gave one of Rana’s close relatives “money for safekeeping.”  Hopefully, law enforcement in Chicago are reading that.

According to another article, Rana was the Uncle Money Bags of the disgusting duo.  Rana ran the halal slaughterhouse near Chicago that was raided immediately prior to Headley and Rana’s arrests.  CBN’s great report and photos from the famous “goat meat raid” is well worth a read.  CBN also notes that Rana’s business is in the same part of town of the Sunrise Equities sharia finance scandal.

The plot thickens.
