Halal abbatoir gets £366K from taxpayers

December 19, 2012

A sharia-compliant slaughterhouse has been granted over one-third of a million pounds by the U.K. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to make Islamic burgers and hotdogs.

A more recent case in Australia of government-funded halal food production no longer seems so unusual.

But these cases should cause alarm for several reasons.  1)  Why are secular governments funding businesses that propagate Islamic (dietary) law?  2)  Such grants contradict the governments’ stated opposition to animal cruelty at non-stun abbatoirs.  3)  If there is such a high demand for halal food, and it’s such a growth industry, then we does it require a public subsidy to remain profitable?  4)  Have these halal butchers been properly vetted and will their books be audited to confirm how they’ll have spent the public funds that they’ve received?

From Eastern Daily Press earlier this fall:

Defra grants £366,000 to Halal food park in Banham

By Adam Gretton Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Up to 60 new jobs could be created in Banham after the government awarded more than £350,000 to a European Halal Food Park.

Officials at Defra defended the grant of £366,000, which is aimed to promote growth in rural areas.

The money comes from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) and will be used to buy equipment to make burgers and sausages in the park’s meat processing facility.

A spokesman for the government department said the cash would not be spent at Simply Halal’s abattoir site in Banham, which slaughters animals according to Islamic law.

A Defra spokesman said: “We awarded business development funding to this company to improve its processes for making burgers and sausages, which would create 60 much-needed jobs in a very rural area as well as supporting Norfolk livestock farmers.”

“We would prefer to see all animals stunned before slaughter but respect the rights of the Jewish and Muslim communities to eat meat prepared in accordance with their religious beliefs.”

Defra has awarded the grant on the basis that the funding will not to be used in any part of the abattoir operation and that the company will create 60 new full-time jobs over the next three years.

The money will also be match funded by the company and the investment will support local farmers in an area where there are not many meat processing facilities, the spokesman added.

The funding was part of a £2m series of projects supporting four other meat processors developed by the East of England Development Agency before responsibility for RDPE funding transferred to Defra.

The European Halal Food Park at Moor Farm, in The Moor, Banham, near Attleborough, was approved two years ago to cater for the growing demand for Halal beef and sheep meat in the UK

The company’s website says that it “boasts the only dedicated 100pc non-stun abattoir for beef and lamb in the UK” with the Halal Burger Company opening in July and the Halal Sausage Company and the Halal Pet Food Company opening last month…

Malaysia imposes sharia food fatwa

March 23, 2012

Like the man who said, “Halal certification has made me a millionaire,” the government of Malaysia has determined that imposing sharia law can be a very profitable enterprise.  At least, that is, in the short term, until sharia law drains all the wealth from its subjects, and causes long-term economic inefficiencies, jealousies, poverty, and inequality that characterizes the Muslim world.  From Jihad Watch earlier this week:

Fines and jail time for Malaysian restaurants not certified as ‘halal’

Showing once again that the Islamic supremacist racket slash ratchet only goes one way. In a few short months, any Malaysian restaurant owner or food vendor that fails to register for and publicly display a ‘halal certificate’ on his premises will face both fines and jail time. There’s no escape — Islamic supremacism continues to steamroll its way through the country in ways both great and small.

From “Jakim: Fine, jail from July 1 for not displaying halal certificate and logo”, The Star, 16 March 2012:

KUALA LUMPUR: Effective July 1, the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) will fine and jail food operators who fail to display halal certificate and logo.

Halal hub division director Hakimah Mohd Yusoff said monitoring will be done in cooperation with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry.

“We will visit every premise from March 31 to educate food operators on the need to obtain the halal certificate and not only display the halal logo,” she said Friday.

Only halal certificates and halal logos issued by Jakim and the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) are recognised.

“Halal certificates issued by the private sector are not recognised and operators who display them will be dealt with. This is stipulated under Section 16 of Domestic Trade Act 2011.” Hakimah said until February, a total of 1,420 applications for halal certificates had been received. – Bernama

This certificate amounts to yet another thinly-disguised ‘jizya’ tax, as 80% of Malaysia’s food industry is owned and/or operated by non Muslims. Each ‘Halal certificate’ costs a reported RM1000, which is about 300 U.S. dollars. As each and every food item sold at a restaurant must be ‘certified as halal’, a Malaysian restaurant could easily be forced to spend up to hundreds of thousands of ringgit to become properly ‘halal certified’. There’s no telling how much this is going to cost the Malaysian economy, or how many businesses will be forced under. But Malaysian Muslims do have their priorities.

Meanwhile, the “occupy movement” and its Muslim cohorts tell us that we should fear “corporate food” and embrace halal food, as though there is no profit motive behind halal food.

“Halal certification has made me a millionaire”

March 20, 2012

With a tip of the hat to Act for Australia.  Coralie Smith is pushing for greater transparency to let Australian consumers know whether or not the companies they buy food from are paying money to halal certification agencies (the stealth halal tax) and indirectly aiding the spread of sharia law. It’s also making some Muslims stinking rich, while the Islamic nations of the world suffer from some of the greatest internal income inequalities on the planet.

Unfortunately, some food producers and sellers are bowing to behind-the-scenes shakedowns from the big halal industry.  This video from “Today Tonight” reports that corporations are paying secret fees and signing non-disclosure agreements with the halal certifiers:

An interview with Puneet Madaan: Germany repeating mistakes of India

February 28, 2012

Money Jihad recently sat down for an informative instant messaging interview with longtime reader and commenter Puneet Madaan.  In this interview, Puneet shares his story about the murders of non-Muslims during the partition of India, which resulted in the deaths of 60 percent of the older generations of his family.  Now living in Germany, Puneet finds that Europe is repeating the mistakes of India in the name of multiculturalism.  For example, the number of dangerous mosques in Germany (often with funding from Turkey) is increasing exponentially, and the government encourages it or turns a blind eye.  Puneet’s proposal?  Learn from history and adopt a clear strategy to combat the problem.

MJ:  Thanks for joining me for this IM interview!  How are you doing?

Puneet:  Fine, in fact, great.  My last day in India, flying back to Germany tomorrow.

MJ:  Were you in India on business or pleasure?

Puneet:  Just on vacation at a pretty interesting time, especially seeing how anti-Israeli propaganda is being pushed in the Indian media, even though the Indian public is more pro-Israel.

MJ: Perhaps the media bias has something to do with the oil that India buys from Iran?

Puneet:  Possibly.  They were blaming Israel for the attack on Israeli embassy personnel in Delhi…  I think we cannot fight it [radical Islam], till we put human rights above everything.

MJ:  Speaking of human rights, you’ve mentioned that you used to be involved with the Human Rights Coalition Against Radical Islam. Could you say more about that?

Puneet:  Yes, HRCARI was an initiative–a learning curve for many–and it even includes Darfuri Muslims.  Yet the point I learned is the limitation on our side.  I, myself, am not in a single organisation that has a real goal… and I think till we define a clear goal, we will be defensive and losing ground day by day.  I do not want to say that one has to take weapon, but being on the offensive in an ideological war at least requires a clear goal, which is missing in ‘fighting terrorism’ side.

MJ:  But you’re no longer involved with HRCARI?

Puneet:  I’m one of the founding members, though I’m no more 100% active with it…

MJ:  I see. You also contributed to http://www.islam-watch.org?

Puneet:  Yes, I did, though I’m unsatisfied with it… not because I disagree, but rather because real change requires real debates and [bringing] taboo issues of Islam in public–issues like apartheid in Mecca and Medina, the mandatory 6th part of Islamic banking, etc.  And lobbies [interest groups] are not doing enough in this front.

MJ:  You’re saying that these groups aren’t doing enough?

Puneet:  Definitely not … If they were, wouldn’t we have sanctions against Saudi Arabia for its official apartheid signs on roads?

MJ:  Are people in the West are afraid to speak the truth?  You never seem to be afraid. You’ve gotten into some verbal tussles with Muslim commenters on our blog who don’t like the truth. They don’t scare you?

Murabaha markup funds sharia

September 26, 2011

Following up on last Wednesday’s post about murabaha, a typical home loan obtained through sharia finance would look something like this chart:

Graphic depicting sharia home loan

The bank holds the title until the borrower has paid off the loan, although some sharia bankers have even figured out ways to go ahead and transfer the title to the borrower immediately.

One question springing immediately to mind when looking at this chart and seeing “Payment of Marked Up Price (P+X)” is “what is X“?

X is often called a markup.  Kind of like, um, well, an interest charge.  Except the sharia bankers have to call it “X” or “markup” or “profit”—just so long as you don’t call it riba or interest.

But whether murabaha is halal or haram is a somewhat distracting issue.  The main problem with murabaha isn’t whether it is genuinely Islamic or an infidel copycat financial instrument.  The main problem is that X doesn’t just equal profit.

X goes into the revenues of the Islamic bank.  A portion of X is diverted into the Islamic bank’s zakat account.  X is overseen by virulent anti-Semitic and terrorist sympathizing Islamic scholars sitting on the bank’s sharia advisory board who have been documented to transfer a portion of X from their bank’s zakat fund as “charity” for jihadist militants in accordance with their Koran.

Muslims say they invented algebra, but they won’t tell you what the X really stands for in this equation.

The X, it must be said, is for sharia.

Taxes & fees to buoy sharia

May 10, 2011

Any time sharia seems to recede to a low ebb in the West, we do our darnedest to keep it afloat.  Even if that means forcing Western citizens to pay increased taxes or fees to assuage the perceived hurt feelings of immigrant Muslims who are too busy embracing the most irrational idiosyncrasies of political Islam to bother adapting or assimilating to their host countries.

Monash, South Australia, will pay $45,000 AUD toward sharia’s rising tide.  From the Herald Sun, h/t to GoV on May 6:

RATEPAYERS will finance a $45,000 screen at a public pool so Muslim women can have privacy at female-only swim sessions.

The City of Monash has approved the financing despite dissent from a female councillor.

Cr Denise McGill said the issue had been divisive.

An Islamic women’s group agreed the screen was unnecessary, Cr McGill said.

“There are sharia swim suits and other modest forms like three-piece swim suits that are generally acceptable for the Muslim community,” she said.

Cr McGill said she supported women-only swim sessions at Clayton pool but said the $45,000 earmarked for curtains could be better spent.

In February, Monash won an exemption from equal opportunity laws to offer fortnightly classes.

But the Victorian Multicultural Commission rejected the council’s application to help meet the cost of privacy curtains.

Muslim Brotherhood nets halal tax revenues

January 6, 2011

The halal food movement in France was troublesome enough when we learned that a secret embedded Islamic tax was being added to each sale.  But CBN reported yesterday that it’s worse than that, because France’s $7 billion halal food industry has links to the Muslim Brotherhood.  Buying halal food doesn’t just mean a deeper penetration of sharia into the West–it could mean that a portion of the purchase price ends in the pockets of Muslim Brotherhood cohorts.

Here’s CBN’s full article:

PARIS — Halal food, food prepared according to Islamic sharia law, is becoming an increasing part of the Western diet and has become a multi-billion dollar global industry.

But CBN News has discovered that some of that money is funneled to groups tied to terrorism.

Muslim halal food is creeping into the food chain not only in France, but worldwide, including the United States.

CBN News visited a butcher shop in a Muslim area of Paris. But it was no ordinary butcher shop. Our camera operator was warned to stop taping.

Why would a butcher shop care if it was being photographed? One reason, according to an Islamic expert we consulted, may have been that our camera operator, who is not a Muslim, was unclean and this was a halal butcher shop.

Halal is the Arabic term meaning legal or permissible. For meat to be halal, a Muslim must chant, “In the name of Allah; Allah is the Greatest,” before slitting the throat of a fully conscious animal with a knife, and while facing the direction of Mecca.

The Fight AgainstHalal

The value of the halal food market in France alone is estimated at $7 billion, and has doubled in five years. France’s second largest fast food chain, Quick, now serves halal-only menus in 22 of its restaurants, targeting France’s large Muslim population.

But Quick’s halal burger stands in France are almost completely owned by the French government, which means the government, whose constitution mandates strict secularism, is in the religious food business.

Leading the fight against Quick’s sale of halal food is Charles Aslangul, a 21-year old city councilman, college student, and president of the Republican Order.

“We respect all religions, but I want to maintain the wall between the French state and the religious, and between a state-owned company and a religious food product. This should not happen with public money,” he told CBN News.

When Aslangul began his campaign, he said the media treated him like a fascist. He was eventually charged with hate speech. A court found him innocent, and now the young French politician is suing Quick for false accusation.

“Islam is trying to impose itself in the public area. I am not stigmatizing Islam. I am simply describing the situation when Islam’s radical wing tries to impose itself over our republican laws,” he explained.

A Shill for Sharia, Terrorism?

So what’s the big deal about halal food? To some Frenchmen who are seeing the growing Islamization of their country, it’s a very big deal.

“Islam is introducing sharia into our society and that’s not clear for people,” Alain Wagner, a French activist with the Alliance Against Sharia, said. “When you see halal food in shops you think, ‘Oh, it’s just a kind of food.’ No. it’s sharia.”

According to some experts, a portion of the proceeds from halal food sales in France go to groups tied to terrorism.

When a French consumer buys Halal food, part of the price paid goes as a fee to Halal Islamic experts. Some of those experts are certified by the UOIF, the Union of the Islamic Organizations in France, which the Simon Wiesenthal Center reports has strong ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational political organization that supports terrorism.
